Biscayne Nature Center x Free Plastic

Biscayne Nature Center x Free Plastic

Biscayne Nature Center’s first cleanup with Free Plastic was held on Saturday, February 27, 2021 from 3 to 5pm at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center.

We had 12 participants and they collected over 50 pounds of pollution! And, from that 50 pounds of waste, we were able to recover 12.84 pounds (5.82kg) of plastic that was recycled into letters to support Free Plastic’s Plastic Poetry program.

To date, Free Plastic and Biscayne Nature Center have partnered to hold numerous environmental cleanups since 2021, where plastic pollution is not just removed from the local environment, but also recycled in public art and cherished products.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center hosts two of Free Plastic’s plastic poems. Poetry written by community members, forged in plastic waste collected on the shores of Key Biscayne, and hung as art on the walls of the Center.

Biscayne Nature Center has collected over 100 pounds of plastic waste, donating it to Free Plastic for use as material in the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami’s 2025 Art on the Plaza exhibition by Free Plastic’s founder Nathan Justice Moyer. Their plastic waste was also used in installations at Big Cypress National Preserve and throughout the City of Boca Raton.
