Meet the Pufferfish! [pictured right] Did you know that these little ocean dwellers have a big secret? When threatened, pufferfish can gulp water (or air) and inflate into a spiky ball—making themselves much harder to swallow!
✨ Fun Facts:
🔹 There are over 120 species of pufferfish worldwide.
🔹 Their skin and organs contain a toxin that’s 1,200x stronger than cyanide—making them one of the ocean’s most toxic animals.
🔹 Despite their defenses, pufferfish are curious and often swim right up to divers.
Here in Biscayne Bay, pufferfish play an important role in the ecosystem, helping keep algae and invertebrate populations in check.
💙 Next time you’re by the water, keep an eye out—you might just spot one of these “balloon fish” cruising through the seagrass!
